A newly developed 75-mile "water trail”, which charts a course for paddlers along the Lake Michigan shore from Chicago, Illinois to New Buffalo, Michigan, will be designated as a National Recreation Trail by the United States Department of the Interior at a press conference in Chicago on June 2, 2011. On National Trails Day, June 4th,, the Northwest Indiana Paddling Association, the Lake Michigan Water Trail Association, and their partners and supporters will hold a trail dedication ceremony 1:30 p.m. at the Portage Lakefront and Riverwalk. Sea kayakers will leave Marquette Park at 11:30 (CDT) and paddle 4 miles to the dedication. A second, simultaneous, group of recreational kayakers, as well as canoeists, will begin on the Little Calumet River at the Miller Charter of the Izaak Walton League. Both trips will arrive at the Portage Lakefront and Riverwalk at 1:30 pm (CDT), for the dedication ceremony, which will highlight the public, private, and non-profit organizations that supported the trail.
