Join us for this fun and energizing symposium which offers classes, trips and related events for paddlers of all skill levels. The symposium - which will take place Sept. 19-21, 2014 - is based at Kiptopeke State Park on the Virginia Eastern Shore. The venue is perfect. The Virginia Barrier Islands are a true wilderness area in the middle of the east coast. Moreover, from the state park, we have immediate access to both the calmer waters of the Chesapeake Bay and the rougher water of the Atlantic Ocean. There will be about 10 classes to choose from each day including those for "newish" paddlers (e.g., Beyond the Basics), intermediate paddlers (e.g., Intro to Rougher Water, Intro to Surf, BCU 3* training and assessment) and more advanced sea kayakers (e.g., Advanced Surfing, Open Water Skills, Wreckage in the Wave Train). The instructors are some of the best! They include Jen Kleck, Tom Nickels, Alison Sigethy, Tom Noffsinger, Ed Schiller, Brian Blankinship, Jay Gitomer, Paula Hubbard, Ken Fandetti, Mike Kunselman, and Rick Wiebush. Each year there are about 55-60 participants representing 8-10 different states. Most participants stay together in the spacious and comfortable lodges at the state park. People say this is one of the things that makes the event so special, because it produces a sense of comraderie and community. There is always a Friday night social event (last year was the Reel Paddling Film Festival) and the wonderful Saturday night dinner and door prize give away. About half the participants end up getting door prizes, some of which are quite spectacular! They range from handy equipment (e.g., compass, bilge pump), books and videos, and free instruction or trips to really expensive paddles and PFDs. A new symposium course offering this year will be an ACA L4 Instructor Certification Exam, which will be offered by Tom Nickles. The $410 cost includes all classes, lodging and the Saturday evening dinner. Full course listings, schedule and registration information will be available on the Cross Currents website around April 1, 2014. We hope you can join us.
