The 2014 Lincoln Heritage Water Trail's "Abe's River Race" will provide paddlers the opportunity to explore approximately 7.5-13 miles of the lower Sangamon River as it flows north from Sangamon County, past Lincoln's New Salem Historic Site, and on to Petersburg, Illinois. The race will start on the morning of Saturday, August 30th with an expected finish between

2:00 - 3:30 pm.

Abe's River Race will include 9 racing divisions along with open registration for recreational paddlers:

Awards will be presented in each division. Additional awards and prizes will be given out at the post-race reception at the Riverbank Lodge in Petersburg.

The Wooden Boat division is an open category for all wooden boats, historical in nature, and of any length. We encourage participants in this division to embrace the local cultural history and heritage of the Sangamon River. Special awards will be presented to the boat and/or team that best represents this division and the cultural heritage of the river.

There will be two starting points along the river. The racers will start from the Irwin Bridge Road boat ramp and have a course length of approximately 13 miles. There will be a second starting point at Gudgel Road bridge for the recreational paddlers. This course will be approximately 7.5 miles.
