More Information

The Central Jersey Stream Team is proud to present our very first educational event...the "Restore the Raritan Canoe & Kayak Rally"! The event will feature talks by dam removal specialist John Jengo as we enjoy a relaxing day floating the Raritan River from Duke Island Park in Bridgewater to South Bound Brook. (An early pull out point will be available in Raritan Borough for paddlers interested in a shorter trip.) As we make our way downstream from the "Headagates" dam, John will highlight the environmental and recreational benefits of a dam free Raritan River. We will learn about the last two standing dams on the main stem of the Raritan River and John will discuss the removal process of the Calco, Robert Street and Nevius Street dams that he worked so hard to remove over the last 3 summers, making way for a much more enjoyable paddle. Along the way CJST will highlight the areas of the river that have already been cleaned as well as the challenges that lie ahead in cleaning the river downstream of Raritan Borough. This stretch of river will provide paddlers with an interesting cross section as we will be able to see the potential of a dam free and clean river vs a dammed and unfortunately littered waterway. The event will begin at 10:00 am. We encourage all paddlers to arrive early to set up shuttles and to portage their kayaks and canoes from the Duke Island Parking Area to the "Headgates" dam launch area. (Parking is extremely limited near the Sellers Maintenance/Duke Island Park lot 13 near the dam. We strongly encourage all who wish to drop off canoes/kayaks here to then drop off their vehicles at lot D and walk west to the launch point. An early departure pullout will be available in Raritan Borough for paddlers who wish to do a shorter trip. Regular pullout will be in South Bound Brook making for a trip just over 10 miles.
