American Canoe Association Level 3: Coastal Kayak Instructor Development Workshop / Update Dates: January 20-23 2015 Location: The IDW/Update will be based out of Sweetwater Kayaks, St. Petersburg Florida Overview: The purpose of the Level 3 Instructor Development Workshop is to expose candidates to a variety of teaching/coaching methods and behaviors intended to prepare them for teaching and leading in various coastal kayak environments. At its core, the L3 IDW is a highly student centered experience where candidates will have the opportunity to experiment with a variety of teaching methods and challenge themselves in the environment while receiving feedback from both peers and the instructional staff. Content Areas: • The Teaching/Instructing/Coaching (TIC’ing) Process • Personal Skills Refinement • TIC’ing the Principals of Paddlesport • Teaching Navigation for Coastal Paddlers • Incident Avoidance and Management in the Coastal Environment • The ACA our National Paddlesports Body Why do we separate training and assessment? While the ICW (Instructor Certification Workshop) has become an increasingly popular method of certifying instructors and is still a valid mode of acquiring an ACA Instructor Certification it poses numerous challenges. It is unrealistic to expose candidates to potentially new concepts and content early in a course and expect unconscious competence or mastery in days or hours without adequate time for practice and application. It is equally unrealistic for assessors to perform a formal, objective examination in the context of a training course, when candidates are expected to be experimenting with new concepts, content and coaching behaviors. Therefore, under the ICW model, candidates are often assessed based on personal paddling in the L3 venue, and their ability to teach pre-assigned content in a structured method to peers rather than real students. Our goal is to develop instructors who are both excellent paddlers and highly skilled and creative teachers, instructors and coaches, who upon assessment have the opportunity to work with real students in the Level 3 venue and address their individual needs. ACA L3 IDW Candidate Pre-requisites: While time will be spent refining personal skill and addressing a spectrum of techniques, the purpose of an IDW is not to teach candidates fundamental strokes or maneuvering skills. Therefore, candidates must be confident maneuvering, preforming rescues and managing basic incidents in either the L3 venue at the beginning of the course. If you are unclear about your level of readiness we encourage you contact a current ACA L3 or higher Instructor and participate in an ACA Level 3: Coastal Kayaking Skills Assessment. General ACA IDW Pre-Requisites: • Be 18 years or older • Be a current ACA member in good standing. • Be able to independently participate in all skills, activities and rescues listed in the appropriate ACA Certification Course Outline and Instructor Criteria documents • Be able to effectively communicate with the Instructor Trainer and other course participants • Be able to manage all personal care and mobility independently • Meet the ACA Essential Eligibility Criteria ACA L3 Update Pre-Requisites: • Meet all of the aforementioned criteria. • Teach and Report to the National Office at least two courses that meet either the L3 standard within the four year certification period. • Maintain ACA Membership and SEIC Registration annually. • Possess current First Aid and age appropriate CPR credentials.
