The Instructor certification program is made up of two components, the Instructor Development Workshop (IDW), and the Instructor Certification Exam (ICE). We have chosen to separate the IDW and the ICE because we believe that it is unrealistic to expose candidates to potentially new concepts and content early in a course and expect unconscious competence or mastery in days or hours without adequate time for practice and application. By providing comprehensive written feedback at the end of the IDW and by allowing time for candidates to refine skills and practice new concepts learned during the IDW, we have found that candidates achieve a greater level of success during the ICE. Therefore, students interested in becoming certified are required participate in both sessions of the course with the understanding that participation does not guarantee certification. This IDW program is designed to refine the paddling and teaching skills of already-competent paddlers aspiring to become instructors. Certification is based upon successful demonstration of technical competency and the ability to teach effectively in either the Level 3 or Level 4 instructional venue. This IDW will allow aspiring instructors to experience the ACA curriculum and work on their own teaching techniques. Combined with additional personal experience and expertise in coastal kayak instruction, this workshop will help to prepare students for the ACA Level 4 Open Water Coastal Kayaking Instructor Certification Exam (ICE) being held later this spring.
