Does your canoe need some “obedience training”? Join us for some excellent canoe instruction, good companionship and beautiful scenery at the Adirondack Canoe Symposium!

The ACS offers excellent instruction in a quiet water venue for people wishing to improve paddling and precise boat control skills. We are located at Paul Smiths College, in the beautiful Adirondack Park; there are numerous nearby paddling opportunities, as well as activities such as hiking, biking, historic tours, shopping, etc. for non-paddling friends or spouses.  The ACS will happen concurrently with the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association Assembly.

Courses are offered in all skill levels, both solo and tandem canoe,  for beginning canoeist through those who have been paddling all their lives.   The curriculum will include Freestyle classes as well as special topics such as Forward Stroke Clinic, Touring Technique, Moving Around in Your Boat, Paddling in the Wind and Waves, etc. Classes are taught by ACA certified instructors, who will assess your skills and work with you, at your pace and comfort level, to help you accomplish your paddling goals. Student/instructor ratio is limited to 5 to 1. Paddling classes are offered on Friday, July 15 through Sunday, July 17. On Thursday, July 14, paddlers can take part in guided Off-Campus river/lake paddles.

There are a variety of lodging options. Air conditioned rooms are available in the Paul Smiths College dorms. Camping is available at the Alumni Campground (wilderness) or Buck Pond State Campground. There are limited hookups for folks coming with RVs. Cabins, motels and hotels are available nearby in Saranac Lake, Lake Clear and Lake Placed.

We offer full meal options at the Paul Smiths Dining Hall. Dorm rooms include kitchens, so self-catering is an option.

For paddling classes, please bring a canoe, paddles, PFD (to be worn at all times when on water), and kneeling pad.  Instructors will teach you in the canoe that you bring.

For any questions, please contact Robyn Lowenthal at or 201-314-4462.
