2016 ACA Level 4 Coastal Kayaking Trip Leader Workshops
Training: October1-2 Marquette, MI
Assessment: October 21-23 Marquette, MI

ACA Level 4 (L4) Coastal Kayaking Trip Leader (TL) workshops are aimed at paddlers wanting to lead groups in up to Level 4 conditions: 15 - 20 knot winds, 3 - 5 foot seas, 2 - 4 foot surf and 2 - 4 knots of current. Per ACA requirements, these workshops are being run as a pilot in 2016 and co-led by L5 ITE Sam Crowley of Marquette, MI & L4 IT John Browning of Miwaukee, WI. They will provide feedback to the ACA to assist in the TL rollout process.

The Marquette shoreline provides the necessary environmental features needed for the workshops – 4 islands, many small islands & reefs, sandy beaches and rocky shorelines are within a half days paddle. Add conditions and this is a great place for training & assessing trip planning, group management, navigation, risk management and more. If necessary for conditions, a 90 minute drive provides access to the Munising area (home of Pictured Rocks & Grand Island) as well as Lake Michigan. Note that assessment requires candidates to paddle & lead in L4 conditions. Being able to travel, using three days (instead of two) for assessment and scheduling it in October provides a greater chance of having the required conditions.

John has been coaching & instructing coastal kayaking for nearly 20 years, is an ACA L4 Coastal Kayak Instructor Trainer and currently serves as the Chair of the ACA’s Coastal Kayak Committee. He has taught at Midwest symposiums as well as on the East Coast. John is also an EMT and instructor with the Wilderness Medical Associates. Sam Crowley has been an ACA IT since ’99, ITE since ‘02 and has worked regionally with outfitters providing ACA training and certification for their staff members. He has extensive paddling experience in expeditions on Lake Superior, west & east coasts of North America and in Europe (Ireland, Finland & Sweden).
