Prime Paddlesports will be offering an American Canoe Association Level 1 / Level 2 Instructor Certification Workshop (ICW) over Columbus Day Weekend, Saturday, October 8th to Monday, May 10th. The ICW will be led by Instructor Trainer Candidate, Matt Kane and Instructor Trainer Educator, Todd Wright. This ICW combines the Instructor Development Workshop as well and the Certification Exam into a single three-day course. Course leaders will spend time working with the instructor candidates on personal skills, group management and teaching ability. The course will incorporate dry-land teaching in addition to on-water sessions. An emphasis will be placed on safety, efficiency, proper communication, progressive teaching skills. The IT's will assess the candidate with the appropriate skills criteria in required conditions.
Price per Person: $425 which includes three nights of lodging in shared bunk style accommodations in the main lodge at the camp.
About the IT's
Matt Kane - Instructor Trainer Candidate
Matt has been paddling for over twenty years and had been teaching for the past eight years. He owns and operates Prime Paddlesports in the lower Hudson Valley and operates the Hudson Valley Paddlesports Symposium, now in its third year.
Matt has served as Director-at-Large with the Hudson River Watertrail Association, and competed in the Mayor's Cup. He has paddled along the eastern seaboard, with many of the sports best trainers and educators. In 2015, his paddling took him across our northern border when he was invited to teach at the Bay of Fundy Sea Kayak Symposium. In 2014, Matt launched the Hudson Valley Paddlesport Symposium; which remains the tristate area's premier paddling event for beginner and intermediate paddlers. Most recently, Matt became a member of Team Dagger.
Matt is an American Canoe Association (ACA) L4 Open Water Instructor, A SOLO Wilderness EMT / Educator. He is a federal employed Ski Patroller who works at West Point Military Academy's Victor Constant Ski Area. Matt is a member of his local fire company, where he lends his skills and ability on lost and injured hiker calls in the Hudson Highland State Park region.
Todd Wright - Instructor Trainer Educator
Todd is an adventure sports coach and educator who has worked in outdoor pursuits for over 20 years. He is the Director of the Adventure Sports Center at Saint Michael’s College in Colchester, Vermont which offers college students professional training, assessment and expedition programming in a broad range of adventure sport to include coastal kayaking, whitewater kayaking and surf kayaking. At his core, Todd is a teacher, instructor and coach whose focus is on creating highly differentiated and fun learning experiences for any ability level, both on and off the water. He is one of only four North Americans to successfully assess as a British Canoe Union (BCU) Level 5 Coach Sea and is an American Canoe Association (ACA) L5 Advanced Open Water Instructor Trainer Educator, ACA L4 Whitewater Instructor Trainer and ACA L4 Surf Kayak Instructor. Todd serves as an instructor educator for SOLO Wilderness Medicine where he works with diverse groups to include, components of the armed forces. In collaboration with SOLO, he continues to develop discipline specific content such as, the Wilderness First Aid H2O. Additionally, Todd earned his Master’s Degree in Education and is currently working toward a post graduate degree in performance coaching. He also holds awards in the ski, climbing and mountain biking disciplines. He is a team paddler for P&H Kayak and Werner Paddles and an ambassador for Kokatat. Kayaking and adventure sport have afforded Todd the opportunity to paddle, climb, ride and ski throughout North America, South America, Africa and Europe. He feels it’s a privilege to be present whenever and wherever learning is happening.
