Join the Potomac Riverkeeper and Friends of Dyke Marsh for a wonderful sunset paddle and learn about successful conservation efforts currently underway to preserve and restore Dyke Marsh. Dyke Marsh is tucked away along the George Washington Memorial Parkway just south of Alexandria. Managed by the National Park Service, it benefits greatly from an active group of volunteers, the Friends of Dyke Marsh. It is located east of the George Washington Memorial Parkway and the Mount Vernon Trail and is part of the Potomac Heritage National Scenic Trail and Captain John Smith Chesapeake National Historic Trail. Dyke Marsh is one of the largest remaining freshwater tidal wetlands in the Washington metropolitan area and considered a hidden gem. The 485 acres of tidal marsh, floodplain, and swamp forest is best explored by boat or on foot. Dyke Marsh has an abundance of wildlife including nearly 300 species of birds. No wonder it is known as one of the best birdwatching sites in the Metropolitan Area. This tidal freshwater marsh is typical of many others around the Chesapeake. It would have served as a place for local Indians to harvest edible plants and to trap both water birds and mammals, like muskrats.
