ACA Mission:
Founded in 1880, The American Canoe Association (ACA) is a national nonprofit 501 (c)(3) organization serving the broader paddling public by providing education related to all aspects of paddling; stewardship support to help protect paddling environments; and sanctioning of programs and events to promote paddlesport competition, exploration and recreation.  

Department Overview:
The Stewardship & Public Policy Department manages all aspects of the ACA’s grassroots efforts to provide appropriate access to clean water on America’s rivers, lakes, streams, bays, coastlines and oceans.  The department coordinates a range of water based clean ups throughout the country, from freshwater rivers to the marine environment as well as providing funding and support to local and regional paddling clubs.  In addition, this department represents the ACA in a wide range of local, regional and national public policy initiatives that have a direct impact on paddlesports and the various paddling environments.

Position Description:  

The Public Policy Chief (PPC) position will work towards furthering the ACA’s positions on access and water stewardship in terms of local, state and national public policy.  This includes working with other staff, individuals, organizations, and local, state and federal government entities.  The PPC will also serve as the primary policy contact for the ACA with the Outdoor Alliance.  The PPC position must maintain professionalism through both written and verbal communications and must work with a high level of diligence and courtesy while working with individuals, organizations, and government entities.  This position reports to the ACA Chief Operating Officer and Executive Director and lasts until December 31, 2018.

Job Duties:
Represent the ACA and paddlers with local, state and federal regulatory entities in the areas of water stewardship and access
Effectively communicate with decision/policy makers concerning ACA’s position on relevant issues
Serve as the Policy Chief for the ACA on Outdoor Alliance initiatives
Craft and distribute time sensitive Action Letters on a monthly basis
Promotion of public policy work through the ACA website, eBlasts and social media
Work as directed with national and local committees and groups with regard to promoting the ACA and paddlesports 
Update portions of the ACA website and social networking sites
Communicate appropriately and effectively with the general public
Provide staff assistance at programs and events as needed
Work related travel: 5%
Other duties as assigned

General Qualifications:
Possess superb communication skills, both written and verbal
Ability to handle issues of a complicated / complex nature and create solutions to problems before they are presented to management 
Use creativity and attention to detail while handling multiple tasks and meeting assigned deadlines
Ability to interpret policies and guidelines (with training)
Possess essential computer skills including email, excel, word processing, and database management
Ability to lift and move equipment and materials up to 50 pounds
College degree required
Be able to manage all personal care and mobility independently
Must have a valid driver’s license 
Enjoy working with people and contributing to a pleasant work environment
Must be a self starter and able to develop projects that further the ACA’s mission

Position Qualifications:
Knowledge of water related or recreation based public policy issues
Ability to research complicated local, state and federal policy topics in a timely manner
Experience writing position papers and letters of support
Ability to effectively communicate with local, state, and federal agency personnel

Compensation:
Salary: $500.00 per month

Additional Information:
This position is part-time as an Independent Contractor
Typical work schedule: 
    • Approximately 10 hours per week, times to be determined by staff member
    • Weekday and weekend travel required
Location(s): ACA National Office or telecommute position
