HB 797 provides an important opportunity to expand the public's access to Maryland's waterways for fishing, canoeing and kayaking -- one that can be achieved relatively quickly and at little or no cost.
The ACA will be testifying on Tuesday, February 26th in Maryland on behalf of paddlers.
I generally support water access via roadway bridges, but not all access points are equal. Some are dangerous due to high traffic volume, others lack adequate/safe parking and some have steep slopes making launching craft difficult. Consideration should be given to safety and nearby access points that already exists. For example, if a public launch is located within 3 miles of a bridge, then that bridge should not have access.
Founded in 1880, The American Canoe Association (ACA) is a national nonprofit organization serving the broader paddling public by providing education related
to all aspects of paddling; stewardship support to help protect paddling environments; and sanctioning of programs and events to promote paddlesport
competition, exploration and recreation.
