ACA Paddlesport Insurance

Paddling is generally a fun activity involving minimal risks, but occasionally bad things happen. Paddlers may be injured, and boats and paddling equipment may be damaged, lost or stolen.

The ACA offers two types of insurance to protect against these situations.

Liability Insurance

The ACA's Liability insurance program protects paddling clubs, ACA members and ACA-certified instructors against liability claims brought by paddlers (or their family members) who have been injured and are seeking compensation for their injuries. This insurance will pay the costs of defending against an allegation of liability, including lawyer fees, and will also pay damages, up to the policy limit.

2010 ACA Liability Insurance Coverage Summary

Obtaining insurance for on-water activities can be difficult and expensive. That's why the ACA provides this valuable service to the paddling community. The ACA's program provides excellent coverage from a highly-rated insurance company. It can be used for paddling in all classes of water, and is available at affordable rates. Submitting an application is easy, and the ACA staff is ready to assist you in filling your insurance needs.

Hull Insurance

If your club owns expensive equipment, you need to be a part of our Hull insurance program. The program provides property insurance that will help you replace your boats or equipment if they are damaged, misplaced or stolen (subject to a deductible). The program is very affordable, with premiums set at 3% of the value of the property insured. Learn more about our Hull Insurance program on this page.

Personal Accident Insurance (Outdoor Recreation Insurance, “ORI”)

ACA members may now buy personal paddle sports accident coverage for $60 per year under the ACA group policy.  (Coverage for other activities is also available). ORI accident benefits are paid directly to the injured person. If you have health insurance, ORI’s cash accident benefits can be used to pay deductibles, co-insurance amounts and other flat-fee copayments. If you don’t have health insurance, you may still purchase ORI coverage for the same price and use the cash benefits to pay medical bills directly, subject to an ORI deductible. All benefits are paid on a cost-incurred basis.  When purchasing, you will be asked to provide an ACA member number.

Visit the ORI website to learn more about this valuable insurance benefit. Be sure to indicate you are an American Canoe Association member.
