Outdoor Recreation Insurance

All ACA members are now eligible for enrollment under the ACA's group Outdoor Recreation Insurance (ORI) policy, to address concerns about paying out-of-pocket for a paddlesports accident.

ORI is not available to the general public and is being provided to you as an exclusive member benefit.

What is ORI?
If you have an accident during a covered activity, ORI pays cash benefits to you for ambulance and medical expenses, and will also make a lump sum payment in case of accidental death. Benefits are paid to you on a cost-incurred basis.

If you have health insurance:
All health plans these days impose significant "cost-sharing" requirements. Many health plans impose annual out-of-pocket maximums of $4,000 to $10,000. In addition, health insurance companies are still allowed to exclude coverage for so-called "dangerous activities".

So use ORI benefits to pay your health plan deductibles, co-insurance amounts (usually 20-30 percent of charges), and other flat fee copayments. ORI also provides a valuable backstop in case your health plan has a “dangerous activity” exclusion.

There is no ORI deductible if you use ORI benefits to pay a deductible under your health plan.

If you don't have health insurance:
You're still eligible for enrollment under the group ORI policy, and the available ORI benefits will you help pay for covered ambulance and medical bills. For less than the cost of many one-day lift passes, you can buy yourself a valuable safety net.

Note, ORI benefits are available only for covered accidents and do not cover illness or disease. If ORI is your only source of coverage for medical and ambulance expenses, a $500 deductible applies.
