The 15th Annual Manhattan Kayak Circumnavigation will take place on Saturday, August 4, 2018 (Rain date: August 5, 2018). This annual 30-mile kayak paddle around New York’s Manhattan Island will launch in four groups at the northern end of Manhattan and across the Hudson River in Fort Lee, NJ. Two leisurely and meditative paced groups will leave first and then two moderate paced groups after.

Below are the launch times of each group as well as the approximate return times. For more detailed float plan of each group just click on the group name.

o    8:15 AM (Group C, moderate pace).

·         Two groups launch from New York at Dyckman Street Beach/Inwood Canoe Club, Manhattan, NY

o    7:30 AM (Group B, leisurely and meditative pace)

o    9:00 AM (Group D, moderate pace)

·         All kayakers will meet for lunch at Gantry State Park and Anable Basin, Queens between 1:30 PM and 3:00 PM.

·         Return to Dyckman Street (NY) will occur between 7:15 PM and 7:45 PM

From the first Circumnavigation, organized and led by Steve Blumling and Jerry Blackstone in 2004, this event has continuously grown and this year we expect more than 150 kayakers both local and out-of towners. Some of our participants come from distant states and even foreign countries. Sponsored by Yonkers Paddling and Rowing Club since 2014, the paddle has come to represent and celebrate the public’s increasing interaction with a more environmentally healthy New York City waterfront and Hudson River Estuary. Last year the event was covered by the NY Daily News.

The Manhattan Kayak Circumnavigation from its start has never been a race, but rather a chance to exercise, meditate, take pictures and socialize. And, to be dazzled by the Manhattan skyline as only a kayaker can see it. Support of the Circumnavigation has broadened to include several other NYC area organizations including the Waterfront Alliance, New York City Watertrail Association, Inwood Canoe Club, Long Island City Community Boathouse, Village Community Boathouse, The Hoboken Cove Community Boathouse and Long Island Kayaking Enthusiasts.

The Circumnavigation is open to all who qualify based on their paddling abilities and experience. All participants must have a decked sea kayak 14’ or longer and have open water experience. Specific qualification requirements will be detailed in the application form. Club membership is not required and out-of-towners are welcome. Careful planning means that the tidal currents help rather than oppose the paddlers. Safety of the large group is enhanced via general marine radio use; safety boat and jet-ski escorts and Coast Guard notification.

New features this year:

1. Camping in NJ: At the Alpine Boy Scout Camp--9 miles north of the NJ Launch.

For $5 you can leave your tent up from Friday until Monday.

2. Two leisurely and moderate paced groups will launch from the NJ side and the NY side

3. Boat rentals will be available at Hazard’s Ramp in NJ and at Inwood Canoe Club in NY

4. The lunch stop will be at Gantry State Park and Anable Basin 2 miles south of our usual stopover at Hallets Cove and Socrates Sculpture Park. Here we will come together for group photos with the landmark Pepsi sign and the Manhattan Skyline.
