The 39th annual Great Rappahannock Whitewater Canoe Race (GRWCR) is designed to be both a competitive or a relaxed event and is family and pet friendly. This classic Fredericksburg event always occurs on the first Saturday in June.  

 

The GRWCR is a cornerstone of the  Rock the River event!

 

Proceeds from the 2019 annual race will support:

Races Include:

  • Flatwater Youth Races (100 yards, Free) - Kayak or SUP
    • kayaks provided (or you can bring your own)
    • SUPs provided (or you can bring your own)
  • Flatwater SUP Race (1.8 miles)
  • Flatwater Kayak Race (1.8 miles - new for 2019!)
  •  Whitewater Downriver (5 miles) - Canoe, Kayak & SUP Race
  • Whitewater Sprint (1 mile) - Canoe, Kayak & SUP Race
  • Canoe Poling Downriver (5 miles)
  • Scout Challenge (tandem canoe race for Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts & Venture Scouts)

Prize Money!

 

For 2019, the following prize money will be awarded to the fastest male and female competitors in the following races:

  • $100 - Downriver Whitewater Kayak: Men
  • $100 - Downriver Whitewater Canoe: Men
  • $100 - Downriver Whitewater Kayak: Women
  • $100 - Downriver Whitewater Canoe: Women
  • $50   - Sprint Whitewater Kayak: Men
  • $50   - Sprint Whitewater Kayak: Women
  • $100 - Flatwater SUP: Men
  • $100 - Flatwater SUP: Women
  • $100 - Flatwater Kayak: Men (New class this year)
  • $100 - Flatwater Kayak: Women (New class this year)

 

The fastest male and female, regardless of which class they enter (Junior, Recreational under 50, Recreational over 50, or Expert Class) will receive the prize money for each of the races listed above.  For the Flatwater SUP race, there will only be 1 male and 1 female winner, regardless of board length (provided the board fits into one of the three length classes). For the Flatwater Kayak race, there will only be 1 male and 1 female winner, regardless of boat length (provided the board fits into one of the three length classes). In the event of a tie in a race, the prize money will be evenly split between the winners.

Registration:
  • Online registration will open in late April of 2019 
  •  Benefits of registering online:
    • reduced price
    • faster check-in line on race day to pick up bibs and racer packet 
  • Or, bring a Paper Registration Form (Word / PDF) with you to Race HQ at Old Mill Park
  • Online registration closes on Wednesday, May 29th
  • On-site registration will be at Old Mill Park, starting at 7:30am on race day
  • If you are not an ACA member, please consider joining the ACA, or you will need to pay an additional $5.00 Insurance Fee
Waivers:
  • Save time on race day - fill out your waiver online!
  • Online waiver submission will close at 5pm on Wednesday, May 29th.

Water Levels:
Cancellation & Venue Change:
  • If a registration cancellation is necessary for one or more races, payment, less a $10.00 administrative fee, is refundable if written notice is received prior to May 27th. No refund will be made for cancellations received after May 27th, except when caused by serious personal illness; in this case, the loss will be shared equally.
  • In the event that the Rappahannock River is running at a high level, the races will either be moved to another section of the river which might not contain any whitewater, or the race might be cancelled.  There will be no rain date.  In the event of a cancellation, registration funds will be refunded upon written request.  
  • If the race must be relocated to another section of river or cancelled, this webpage will be updated and an email will be sent to those who have registered online.
