L5 ICE (Oct 29 – Nov 1)

This is the most advanced training for ACA Coastal Kayaking Instructors on the Great Lakes in the best location on the Great Lakes for an ACA Level 5 Instructor Workshop. Nearby Menominee River has the necessary current and locations on Lake Superior & Lake Michigan with strong wind from any direction have the necessary wind, waves and surf for assessment.

Sam Crowley of Sea Kayak Specialists will run the workshop. He is one of the most experienced paddlers and Instructor Trainer Educators not only on the Great Lakes but nationally as well. He has been instructing professionally since 1996, running ACA Instructor Workshops since 1999 as well as paddling expeditions on the Great Lakes, both Coasts of North America and in Europe. In 2007, he paddled solo around Ireland.

Locations will be determined by conditions. Piers Gorge near Norway, MI on the Menominee River is used for current. Open water sites may be Marquette & Munising on Lake Superior or Manistique on Lake Michigan depending on the wind direction & conditions. As part of their assessment, participants recommend a location each morning by using the weather forecast, potential locations and material to cover. The timing of the workshop is to increase the chances for L5 wind, wave & surf conditions. Marquette is where the classroom is located and home base for the course.

These locations enable candidates to demonstrate their ability to not only paddle in Level 5 conditions but to also teach effectively and manage risk when leading a class. Participants can expect a dynamic & challenging workshop. Course is scheduled for four days but can run shorter if all course material is covered.

Hotels available in the Marquette area.

Discount for early registration.
