Regardless of experience, paddlers often find themselves assuming leadership roles before they’re ready. You may have good personal paddling abilities, but leadership and group management skills will help you lead a safe and fun excursion, whether you’re taking your family or friends out for a casual paddle, or guiding an organized group. Over two days, we’ll cover the skills required to lead a group of beginners in protected waters.

Throughout the class, students will be assessed to determine if they meet the ACA standard for Day Trip Leader Certification. Candidates for certification should already have Level 3 paddling skills, as defined by the ACA. The course is intended to provide minimum skills and training necessary for an adult leader possessing basic paddling skills to lead a group of beginning paddlers in gentle conditions.

The content is relevant for clubs, camps, scouts and other entities providing trips. The emphasis is on trip leading, safety education and rescue, not paddling instruction. If you are unsure of your abilities, the Fundamentals of Sea Kayaking class would be a good way to prepare.

Weather permitting, each day will include both classroom time and on-the-water time. In addition to learning material about leadership, trip planning and risk management we will review basic paddling skills, rescues and towing. We’ll have a chance to perform rescues and re-entries, so be prepared to get wet.
