Join HarborLAB for a day of paddling and planting indigenous Hackberry (photo above) and Serviceberry saplings, and of scattering indigenous seed balls in the Plumb Beach area of the Gateway National Recreation Area. Hackberries are date-like and commonly called sugar trees, while Serviceberries are locally known as shadbush and are something like blueberries with a fruit punch twist and tiny almonds for seeds.

Our saplings are courtesy of the New York Restoration Project. Our seedballs were made by students and volunteers. The seeds are courtesy of the Greenbelt Native Plant Center of New York City Department of Parks & Recreation and our own volunteers and students who gathered them, sometimes with our friends at Hunters Point Parks Conservancy. We'll perform our service under the direction of the American Littoral Society - Northeast Chapter

Once we're done planting these habitat supporting trees and flowers, we'll go paddling around White Island!

To participate you must do more than click "join" here. You must email us at with the subject line "Plumb Beach Plant and Paddle." Priority given to students, committed volunteers, and environmental partners. We'll email participants with details on May 20.
