Spring Meeting

MASKGI's annual spring meeting will be held at 10am April 30th, 2016 at the Ecole Francaise du Maine in Freeport. The meeting agenda is still being set but here are some of the suggestions I have received:

-Ways to streamline the organization to make for easy transitions in leadership
-A plan for increasing communication channels between members and the public
-A discussion of the organizations official stance on environmental issues.
-A discussion of ways in which the industry is changing and how the guide exams should evolve to reflect that in a way that is responsible but also not prohibitive to those wishing to enter the profession.
-A discussion of how we should be involved at trade shows and other events, what those events are, and who is willing to spearhead certain ones that are important to them.
-The Coast Guard has also mentioned that they will hopefully be sending someone to discuss changes and updates to their safe boating program.

If there are any items you would like to discuss at the meeting to be included on the agenda please let us know at

We are also planning to do final updates to the website so if you have not renewed your membership and and want yourself or your business included it will be last call for 2016 membership sign ups. Forms are available via the organizations Facebook Page. You can also contact our treasurer Joe G. directly at for membership forms.

Also, we have a favorable tide the day of the meeting so the plan is to be quick and efficient with our agenda and then go for a group paddle launching from Rings Marine Service. It is recommended that you bring your own boat or board or other paddling device but they will have a few boats available for rent if necessary. A huge special thanks to Thornton Ring of Rings Marine Service for setting up the venues for us and for volunteering to provide lunch and refreshments.

For those needing directions to the school.

From the South: Take exit 17 on I-295. Follow Route 1 to So. Freeport Rd and turn right. The school will be on the right.

From the North: Take exit 20 on I-295. Turn right onto Route 1 and go 300ft. Then turn left onto Pine St. Go approximately two miles and turn right at the 4-way intersection onto So. Freeport Rd. The school will be on your left.

We only have these meetings twice a year and it is our hope that we can begin to revitalize MASKGI by garnering better meeting attendance and renewing our focus on a few achievable goals that we can all get behind. The past couple years have been dominated by the question of whether the organization should exist, in what form, and to what scale. It is my impression that many of us have become weary by the stalemate and the lack of ability to come to consensus and just chosen to walk away. Some have even become angry and bitter. It was decided at the last meeting that MASKGI as a concept still had importance and relevance regardless of what its name was yet we literally limped out of the fall meeting with the future of MASKGI hanging by a thread. Our organization is on life support folks. Let's all rally and show our support by attending and voicing our opinions and building upon the relationships we have formed in our small community. Its the only way MASKGI is going to survive.
