This section of the Trinity River National Wildlife Refuge encompasses the more than 800 acres of flooded cypress trees which make up Champion Lake, along with more than 4,600 adjacent acres of hardwood bottom land.

Champion Lake is more of a shallow cypress tree filled swamp than a lake that has a bird rookery in the back of the lake.

Just across the levee from the Champion Lake is Pickett's Bayou. The bayou winds it way south through the refuge and beyond. It is home to numerous birds, alligators, and other wildlife.

Be there by 9 am , we'll start to gather at the Champion Lake boat launch area, We'll probably do 5-7 miles (3 to 4 hrs.) on Champion Lake paddling up and back the major paths of the lake before returning to the launch site.
