The American Canoe Association (ACA) Adaptive Paddling Workshop (APW) is an opportunity for ACA instructors to earn the Adaptive Paddling Instructor Endorsement, It also provides non-ACA instructors an opportunity to earn the ACA Certificate of Completion. The last day of the training is a skills course for individuals with disabilities, where the instructor candidates work in 2:1 trip leader to participant ratios to outfit a kayak and teach kayaking skills for the individual. At the core of the ACA Adaptive Program, APWs provide the information necessary to seamlessly integrate individuals with physical disabilities into outdoor recreation programs in the context of paddlesports. APWs focus on five key topics: (1) Language, Etiquette and Interaction (2) The Legal Context (3) Cultivating Seamless Integration (4) Adaptive Outfitting Concepts & Goals (5) Mechanics of Adaptive Outfitting for Paddlesports This course, taught by Joe Moore, ACA Adaptive Kayaking Committee Chair and Executive Director of Adaptive Expeditions, involves hands-on learning in both a classroom and in an indoor pool. The workshop is designed to provide instructors, outfitters, recreation program providers, and rehabilitation professionals with the information they need to integrate paddlers with disabilities into programs. Included in this course are kayaks, paddles, and PFDs. Light snacks will be provided Friday evening and throughout the days on Saturday and Sunday. A light breakfast and lunch will be provided on both Saturday and Sunday. The course schedule includes (Friday classroom: 4-7pm, Saturday classroom: 8:30am-5:30pm, Sunday classroom/pool: 8:30am-5:30pm). The classroom sessions on Friday and Saturday will be held at the Venture Outdoors Office and the Sunday classroom and pool sessions will be held at a local facility.
