The American Canoe Association (ACA) Level 1-2 Coastal Kayaking Instructor Certification Workshop (ICW) consists of two parts: the Instructor Development Workshop (IDW) and the Instructor Certification Exam (ICE). Lead by Instructor Trainers John Browning, ACA Coastal Kayaking Committee Chair, and Joe Moore, ACA Adaptive Paddling Committee Chair, the 3.5-day course is an intensive, hands-on, cooperative learning experience that is designed to refine instructional techniques and familiarize participants with the processes and curriculum of the ACA. The Instructor Trainers will spend time working with the instructor candidates on personal skills, group management, and teaching ability. Days two and three are assessment days which have all instructor candidates prepare and present lessons to their fellow students to demonstrate their teaching, paddling, and group management skills. The Instructor Trainers will assess the candidates following the ACA Level 2: Coastal Kayaking skills criteria, and pass the candidate, issue a continuance, or fail the candidate. Participation does not guarantee certification. The course will utilize classroom space at the Venture Outdoors office, Kayak Pittsburgh North Park, and Lake Arthur at Moraine State Park. All necessary kayaking equipment is included in the course fee. If you plan to bring your own equipment, please make note during registration. Light snacks will be provided Monday evening and throughout the days on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. A light breakfast and lunch will be provided on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. The course schedule includes (Monday classroom: 4-7pm, Tuesday classroom/lake: 8:30am-5:30pm, Wednesday lake: 8:30am-5:30pm, and Thursday lake: 8:30am-5:30pm).
