The most recent SEIC Discipline Committee Meetings were held on March 2, 2018. They were followed by the collective SEIC meeting the following day, March 3rd. Following these important discussions, the following updates were approved by both the SEIC and the ACA Board of Directors:

  • River Kayak Committee
    • The high brace has been removed from the Level 2: Essentials of River Kayaking curriculum. It remains unchanged in levels 3, 4, and 5.
    • Basic wading (one person assisted) has been added to all Level 2: Essentials of River curricula including SOT River Kayaking, River Canoeing, River SUP, and rafting
  • Coastal Kayak Committee
    • The CKC has made a variety of housekeeping changes within their curriculum documents to include metric conversions for traditional American measurements, such as feet/meters and miles/kilometers
    • The ability to complete a kayak roll has been removed from the Level 3: Coastal Kayaking Skills Assessment requirements
  • SUP Committee
    • The SUP Committee completed a large overhaul of their river SUP program and have introduced a comprehensive Level 3: River SUP curriculum/certification to better align with Level 3 venues/skills as other ACA disciplines
    • All current Level 3: Whitewater SUP Instructors and Trainers have been changed to Level 4: Whitewater SUP; all current Level 4: Advanced Whitewater SUP Instructors and Trainers have been changed to Level 5: Advanced Whitewater SUP
  • Paddlesport Safety Facilitator (PSF) Program
    • ACA Level 3 (or higher) instructors are now eligible to deliver this facilitator certification program to outfitter, livery, or guide service employees in their paddling communities
    • ACA Level 1 or 2 instructors may teach this course only after obtaining the PSF Endorsement from an Instructor Trainer or Educator

Is there an additional instructor update for SOT River Kayaking going to be added?

Eric Slough, I was wondering the same thing. Furthermore, does this mean that the rolling requirement has also been removed from the Coastal Kayak L3 Instructor's ICE?

Curious on the thought process to remove the rolling requirement for level 3 coastal assessment? I thought this was one thing that really seperated level 2 from level 3.
