With the Mach One Team we have started kids at 8 years old. There have been a few that got into a kayak at 7, but it is not really encouraged. I know some families have started kids earlier than that mostly by putting them in the bow of a C-2 and I don't think there is a problem as long as they limit the experience to class I or II, but the risks for a Class III run are much too great... think what a swim would be like for a little kid in a Class III experience. Here is the data over the past 18 years: Boys: 17 of 209 cadet paddlers were <10 years old. 2 seven year olds, 8 were 8 years and 7 were 9 years. No. 188 had one of the worst scores but stuck with it: Alden Henry at 18 has been to 2 Junior Worlds. The rest quit except for one (Lyle was 110 of the 209 and the way he was paddling this week at high water Alden says he will be beating him in 2 years. There was only 1 girl of 73 who completed the Basic course at age 8-2 with about the worst score and have not seen her.
