ACA & COVID-19

The ACA, like many other organizations, is facing challenges due to the spread of COVID-19. On March 15th, The Centers for Disease Control recommended that all gatherings of 50 or more people be postponed for at least 8 weeks. For more, please visit: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/community/large-events/mass-gatherings-ready-for-covid-19.html

Smaller gatherings may be acceptable if proper risk reduction methods, including proper handwashing and social distancing, can be done.  However, event organizers should consider the safety of all participants as their top priority. For risk management considerations that are directly relevant to the mitigation of risk associated with COVID-19, please see this article from ACA's insurance carrier: https://www.sadlersports.com/coronavirus-risk-management-in-sports/

ACA's greatest concern is the safety of our members and of the paddling community as a whole. ACA staff will assist event organizers and instructors if they choose to postpone or cancel events and classes. We recommend that event organizers and instructors follow the recommendations provided by the CDC and their local health department.

The current health situation is fluid, uncertain, and changing day to day.  Until we have more certainty, ACA encourages event organizers and instructors to consider rescheduling events if they cannot be executed while following CDC and health department recommendations.

I encourage you to monitor the ACA website for updates. Please feel free to contact me directly with any questions or concerns at bspilman@americancanoe.org
