Dan Henderson

Department: Competition
Title: Sprint National Team Coach

Boats gliding, intense physical effort, precise technical development, focused mental strength, competing head-to-head, supporting athletes to grow and develop, and great sport friends from all over the world are keystones to Dan’s 40+ years as an athlete and coach. After racing as a US Team member, winning 4 bronze Pan American medals, and training and racing in Hungary for 5 years, Dan has coached and helped developed dozens of National Team members.

Dan is an ICF-ACA Level 2 coach and Coach Trainer, has coached at the club level since 1989, and internationally since 1993. He received his undergraduate degree in Economics from Occidental College, has taken graduate level studies and worked as a Graduate Teaching Assistant, and Adjunct Professor in Exercise Science.

He co-authored the ICF Level 1 Coaching Manual, 1st Ed., Sea Kayaking for the Mountaineers Press, and consulted on the Sports and Recreation college textbook.

Dan is a USAF / CA Air National Guard, Air Rescue Service flight crew veteran. His volunteer service has included American Canoe Association as a Vice-Commodore, Sprint Coach Association Secretary, as well as coach and instructor. Washington State Boating Programs Advisory Council, San Francisco Recreation Center for the Handicapped, West Coast Sea Kayak Symposium, and Bellevue Washington Schools Advisory Board were some other volunteer activities.

Dan’s awards include many National Championships as a Senior and Masters canoeist, Washington State Boating Educator of the Year, Certificate of Good Sportsmanship from USA Canoe/Kayak Officials Association, and United States Olympic Committee Doc Councilman Science Award for Canoe/Kayak.
