Now in its eighth year, the South Dakota Kayak Challenge on the nation's longest river opens registration on Jan. 1. A majority of the Challenge takes place on the Missouri National Recreational River, one of the National Park Service's only wild and scenic rivers. Paddlers - some racing, some out for adventure - have 30 hours to complete the 72-mile course, and last year, more than 170 racers from across North America took part in the event. The Challenge begins May 27, and you can sign up or learn more online at sdkayakchallenge.org. The organizers and volunteers hope you'll join them in May for this unique, never-to-forget experience on powerful Midwestern waters.
