Lou and his wife, Pat, had their first paddling experience by canoeing the Boundary Waters. This fostered his life-long connection to paddle sports and the outdoors. As their family grew, together they enjoyed the outdoors in canoe and kayak, exploring flat water, white water, and coastal waters. Today, Lou focuses on coastal kayaking and has trained with ACA coaches in conditions ranging from tide races in Rhode Island and Connecticut to open water crossings on Delaware Bay and to surfing shore breaks in New Jersey and Virginia. Lou continues to pursue outdoor adventure travel with recent expedition trips to Saguenay Fjord in Quebec, to Nova Scotia and to Newfoundland.
As a biologist, Lou's career at the University of Pennsylvania included work in technology and management. Lou has been an active advocate for the paddling community serving on the Steering Committee of the Delaware River Sojourn, the Planning Committee of the Independence Seaport Museum’s Philadelphia Challenge race, and as a Tidal Delaware River Ambassador for the Pennsylvania Environmental Council. These activities reflect Lou’s passion to protect and enhance the appreciation of our waterways and make it possible for kids to experience the thrill and the serenity of being on the water. While the Jersey shore and Delaware Bay are Lou's most visited local haunts, Lou is interested in conservation of all our water resources.
As the ACA Public Policy Chief, Lou will work toward furthering the ACA’s positions on access and water stewardship. In addition to working with ACA staff, he will work with local, state, and federal government, environmental and other organizations and will be the primary contact for the ACA with the Outdoor Alliance.
