Whether you paddle with one or two other kayakers, or with larger groups, this ACA course will
boost your paddling skills and your ability to lead others! This two-day (Friday/Saturday) class
will be taught by Jeff Atkins, a well-known Charleston-based ACA Level 5 Instructor/IT, and
assisted by ACA L3 Instructors Al and Janie Butcher.
The course will be held at Twin Lakes Recreation and Camping area on Lake Hartwell, near
Pendleton SC, only 10 miles from I-85. Participants may choose to drive in for each of the two
days, or camp at the campground, or stay at one of the motels at I-85 Exit 19 (Anderson SC).
Participants are responsible for your own accommodations & meals.
Skills covered will include Rescues and Tows in a variety of situations, Paddling & Maneuvering
Skills, Trip Planning, Basic Navigation, Group Management, Communication, Troubleshooting
and more! This class is does not provide instructor certification, but emphasizes skills for safe group paddling and the ability to
help other paddlers. Kayak rolling is not included in the course.
Participants must have previously received an L2 level paddler assessment or equivalent. Not
sure if you qualify? An L2 Assessment & Tune-up day will be held approximately three weeks
prior to the Trip Leader weekend so you can determine if you are ready (see April 17 event).
If you are interested in camping, you need book a campsite VERY soon, as this is a popular
campground. Go to recreation.gov to book campsites. (Note: the listing for Twin Lakes
incorrectly says it is near Seneca SC. It is near Pendleton SC.

Covid precautions: The entire course is held outdoors, masks will be worn when needed, and
close contact rescues will be practiced only if participants feel safe or have been vaccinated.
The cost for the two-day course is $145.00 There is a $20 Discount ($125 total) for registrations
