The 1st Annual LA River Boat Race. Yes, you heard that right. It's high time that our much-maligned urban river had its own honorary race.

Get out your paddle and get on the river! You won't want to miss this unique new urban experience in the heart of Los Angeles. Kayak, canoe or paddleboard your way into local history books when you shoot the rapids, round the buoys and sprint to the finish in this first-ever event of its kind.

The course tests contestants of various skill levels in speed, strength, endurance and water craft control.

Kayakers, canoeists and stand-up paddleboarders will tackle a 3/4-mile stretch of the Glendale Narrows in a race for glory (and cool T-shirts and swag). Contestants compete in various age- and skill-level categories for awards and other prizes.

The LA River Boat Race course (which includes the LA River Kayak Race and the LA River SUP Challenge; same course, just different watercraft) cuts through the newly opened Recreational Zone in the lovely Elysian Valley, one of the greenest sections of the river.

Space is limited; first 25 sign-ups receive a special kayak keychain.

Note that participants should have some experience paddling on a river before (including SUPers).

Just another example of the creative ways folks are making use of the river as a revitalized public space. LA River Expeditions has pioneered recreational boating on the LA River since 2008.

Prices are suggested donations, and amounts depend on whether you're bringing your own equipment or using ours.

Don't miss the fun with this novel new LA event! Rain Delay is September 1st.

Sign up at: Spaces are limited.
