CPR, First Aid, & Wilderness Medicine Certifications

ACA certified instructors, trainers, and educators should check with their CPR, First Aid, or wilderness medicine certification agency/organization on steps to extend or be granted provisional certifications. The ACA will consider any certification that included at its origin or most recent recertification hands on skills demonstration and assessment and has been extended or granted provisional status as currently certified. This policy goes into effect July 1, 2020. CPR, First Aid, & Wilderness Medicine certifications considered extended by ACA previously will only extend to June 30, 2020 as previous statements have directed.

This information has been taken directly from ACA's 5/22/20 statement titled "COVID-19 Guidelines for Instructors and Event Organizers."

What does this mean for you, as an ACA instructor?

  • If you have a recently expired or soon expiring First Aid & CPR credential and cannot safely attend a recertification course due the risks associated with Covid-19, get in contact with your certifying agency (I.e., Red Cross, American Heart Association, etc) and ask about potential extension or provisional status.
  • ACA will honor renewals or extensions to a First Aid or CPR credential that had at its origin or most recent recertification a hands on skills demonstration and assessment. This means: credentials that were originally obtained in an online-only format will not be accepted.
  • If you have been given an extension to your First Aid and CPR credentials from the issuing agency, please upload proof of extension/provisional status within the ACA Course Management System (CMS). If you are unsure how to upload these documents, please read page 3 of the userguide.
